Spanish I-IV
The emphasis in these courses is on developing a solid foundation of listening, speaking, reading, and writ-ing skills within a wide vari-ety of topics in Spanish. Stu-dents will master a variety of tenses in conversations, and cover many types of vocabu-lary. Students read narra-tives and many authentic realia, and write paragraphs on personal themes. Culture is taught in context as well as through the use of short stories, and films. The use of the target language by the teacher and the students increases as the student progresses through the lev-els. |
Spanish Heritage I, II, III
The course is for native speakers of Spanish who demonstrate fluency in lis-tening and speaking, and to a lesser extent, reading and writing in Spanish. This im-mersion course is designed to perfect the students’ read-ing and writing skills as well as grammatical structures to increase their skills. Stu-dents undertake an introduc-tion to Hispanic literature, particularly short stories, current events, and history. |
Spanish AP
This course follows the guide-lines of the College Board Ad-vanced Placement Spanish Language. It encompasses au-ral/oral skills, reading compre-hension, grammar, and compo-sition. Students will obtain the ability to comprehend formal and informal Spanish; the ac-quisition of vocabulary and a grasp of structure to allow the easy, accurate easy, accurate reading of newspaper and magazine articles, as well as of modern literature in Spanish; the ability to compose exposi-tory passages; and the ability to express ideas orally with accu-racy and fluency. |
French I,II & III (Honors)
The emphasis in this course is on devel-oping a solid foundation of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills within the context of basic topics. Stu-dents will read short narratives as well as some authentic realia from the franco-phone world and write short personal paragraphs in French Students are able to understand the main points in general conversations and oral stories. In level III Honors students will participate in ex-tended group activities, individual pro-jects, and portfolios may be used to pro-vide measures of student progress. |
Latin I-IV
Reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills focus on similarities between Latin and the students’ own language (i.e., derivatives, grammar and syntax, vocabulary), while building the ability to read and comprehend continuous Latin. The study of Roman culture, history and my-thology, lays a base for appreciating Western culture. Basic forms, syntax, vo-cabulary and culture are taught by read-ings in English and in Latin, structured practice, and multimedia presentations and projects. |
Mandarin Chinese
This course is designed for students with no or very little previous knowledge of Mandarin Chinese (the official language in China). The course focuses on standard pronunciation and practical conversational Chinese. It also introduces basic Chinese characters in simplified version. The in-struction and classroom activity are cen-tered on the four basic language skills, Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writ-ing, within the context of basic topics to be covered in the course. | |
